WHAT I HAVE LEARNED...
11/16/2010
I played six days in a row during a recent vacation to Wilmington NC, and played some really long courses on windy days with temperatures in the high 50’s to about 70 degrees. I stuck with my pre-shot routine described on this web site and played some really good golf. I was able to translate the idea of each shot into the shot itself and all except for 9 holes during a round on Thursday had a concrete tangible idea of what I was trying to do. In other words I could translate the pre-shot rehearsal into the shot. The wind was blowing hard at times and the course played long. I particularly remember one shot I had of 174 yards into a 20 mph wind. The fairways were dormant and pretty tight. So I picked out a 3 wood and rehearsed a left to right shot into the green. The flag was tucked back right. I felt the swing in my rehearsal, then stepped up to it and hit it: the shot came off perfectly and finished about 18 feet left of the hole hole high. I can still feel the impact and see the ball take off into the wind with a slight left to right movement. It seemed to stay in the air a long time, landed softly and rolled back to the depth of the flagstick. It went this way most of the week.
The important thing for me anyway is that my routine takes me out of the thought mode and into the action mode. It gets me, all at once in a holistic kind of way, involved in the golf shot itself. This is the easiest way I can describe it. I also putted very well, almost phenomenally at times. I made many long putts and more birdies overall than I can ever remember making at any one time. I stuck to my putting routine and got to know my new Scotty Cameron Titleist Sonoma putter quite well. The funny thing is that I bent it flatter almost 3 degrees but hold it more upright as I putt, at least this is the way it feels to me.
All in all I was quite happy with the way I played. I learned on some difficult courses that my approach really does work. I shot around 76 average, and was under 80 except for one day on courses that average almost 7,000 yards in length. I put myself to the test and survived in a positive fashion. I can’t wait to play again.
